MEDIA ADVISORY
Statement on Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule
The statement below can be attributed to Fairplay Executive Director Josh Golin:
“It’s great to see Chair Ferguson and the FTC move forward with an updated COPPA Rule, which should serve as a wake-up call to an industry that far too often collects, uses, and shares kids’ data in deceptive and exploitative ways. We’re pleased to see the Commission adopt several of the strong protections we recommended in our comments to the FTC last year, including requiring separate parental consent for sharing data with advertisers and other third parties; limiting data retention; and expanding the definition of personal information to include biometrics. Protecting children online remains one of the few issues that has significant bipartisan support, and we urge Congress to move quickly this year on the Kids Online Safety Act and COPPA 2.0.”
