Congress must side with families, pass reintroduced KOSA
Fairplay, the leading nonprofit working to help children thrive in this screen-obsessed culture, welcomed today’s Senate reintroduction of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA).
Fairplay Executive Director Josh Golin said: “The reintroduction of KOSA is a test of whether Congress will finally stand with families instead of Big Tech. This bill has withstood years of scrutiny, has enormous bipartisan support, and is the only federal legislation that addresses the wide range of design-caused harms experienced by children every day online. Lawmakers must seize this moment and finally deliver the protections children need.”
KOSA was reintroduced today by Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.
The bipartisan bill passed the Senate in July 2024 by the overwhelming margin of 91-3. However, it stalled in the House, thanks in part to massive lobbying by Meta.
KOSA would be the first major new law to protect children online in over 25 years. The legislation would establish a duty of care requiring online platforms to prevent and mitigate harms to minors, including suicide, eating disorders, bullying, and sexual exploitation.
KOSA also has broad bipartisan support from voters. In a poll conducted last year by Hans Kaiser and Associates/Hart Research, 86% of US voters said they support KOSA.
