Fairplay Statement on ChatGPT for Teens

In response to OpenAI’s announcement that it’s creating a ChatGPT experience for users under 18 and launching new parental controls, Fairplay Executive Director Josh Golin released the following statement today:

“Just labeling something a teen version does not make it safe for teens. Just announcing new parental controls does not mean you aren’t endangering parents’ children. ChatGPT should not be targeted at minors at all until it is proven safe for them. OpenAI has said nothing about limiting teens’ data collection or ChatGPT’s human-like features, and it is still relying on parents to manage teens’ experiences instead of ensuring a safe platform for them.

“OpenAI’s announcement is a cynical attempt to undermine today’s Senate hearing on the harm of AI chatbots, and to stall Congress’ attempts to regulate dangerous platforms like ChatGPT. Instead of splashy PR announcements, what parents and teens really need is government regulation that will hold companies like OpenAI accountable and stop them from running a vast, uncontrolled experiment on kids.”
