Fairplay Executive Director Josh Golin released the following statement today:

“We are so pleased that a jury has confirmed what Fairplay and the survivor parents we work with have been saying for years: Social media companies like Meta and YouTube deliberately design their products to addict kids. Between yesterday’s historic verdict in New Mexico and today’s ruling in California, it is clear that Big Tech’s free rein to addict and harm children is over.

“Fairplay expresses our deep gratitude and admiration for the plaintiff in this case and for her family. We also want to thank the dozens of survivor parents who reminded the world of the real human cost of social media’s business model through their daily presence at this lengthy trial.

“Congress should immediately seize on this verdict and the explosive documents released during the trial to pass the Senate’s Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). It’s good to see the plaintiff in this case receive financial damages for the harm she suffered. But to proactively keep children safe on social media, we need to force these companies to change how they design their products. That’s where KOSA comes in. This legislation will create a legal duty for social media companies not to design their products for addiction. It is crucial that our lawmakers pass this bill without delay.

“The court have ruled. Now it’s time for Congress to act.”
