Statement on Meta Reducing ‘PG-13’ Rating System

The following statement can be attributed to Fairplay Executive Director Josh Golin:

“This announcement proves what parents and advocacy groups have been saying all along: Meta is not interested in making its products safe for kids, it’s only interested in good PR. The company’s attempt to co-opt the PG-13 rating system was a farce from the beginning and a shallow attempt to hold off regulation. But instead of a PR coup, it has turned into a PR debacle for Mark Zuckerberg and his fellow executives.

“Between this latest development and the two court verdicts last week holding Meta liable for addicting and exploiting children, it should be obvious to everyone that this company is not capable of self-regulation. Instead, what we need is legislation that will force Meta and other Big Tech companies to change how they design their products so that they are no longer harming our children. It’s time for Congress to pass the Senate’s Kids Online Safety Act and side with American families over greedy and deceitful corporations like Meta.”
