Welcoming LA Schools’ Ban on Student GenAI Use on School Devices
Fairplay Campaign Director David Monahan released the following statement today:
“As the nonprofit leading the national charge for a five-year ban on GenAI products in preK-12 schools, Fairplay welcomes the Los Angeles Unified School District’s policy banning students from using GenAI on school-issued devices.
“We praise LAUSD for doing exactly what it should do: prevent students from using GenAI while taking time to evaluate the safety and appropriateness of these products. If the nation’s second-largest public school district can take this bold and principled stand, there is no reason why other districts can’t do the same. We call on schools everywhere to press pause on GenAI until and unless the technology is proven to be a safe and effective teaching tool for children.
“We also praise Schools Beyond Screens for their incredible leadership in fighting for the well-being of LA students against the greed of the tech industry. GenAI products impede student learning, degrade relationships between teachers and students, corrupt curricula with misinformation, deepen inequities, and more. With this new policy, LAUSD is showing that the expansion of GenAI in schools is not inevitable. It’s time for all schools to impose a moratorium on GenAI.”
