Fairplay Statement on the KIDS Act Passing
Fairplay, the nation’s leading nonprofit fighting to protect kids from the dangers of Big Tech and AI, welcomes the passage of the KIDS Act as an important step toward enacting the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) with a Duty of Care this year. Fairplay sincerely thanks the survivor parents in our partner network, ParentsSOS, for their tireless work over the past week to strengthen the legislation and their four years of determined legislative advocacy.
Thanks to the efforts of these parents, there is now broad bipartisan, bicameral agreement that federal online safety legislation should not preempt states’ ability to enact and enforce their own laws. In addition, the KOSA and Children’s and Teen’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) sections of the KIDS Act contain important new protections for families.
Today’s vote is a valuable step forward, but it is not enough to give children across the country the online protections they desperately need. We will continue to work with House and Senate leaders to push for a Duty of Care in federal online safety legislation, and we look forward to passing robust versions of KOSA and COPPA 2.0 this year.
