Fairplay, the leading national nonprofit fighting to protect kids from Big Tech, released the following statement today as opening arguments begin in New Mexico’s trial against Meta.

“This trial is a vital step toward finally holding Meta accountable for the harms it has exposed countless children to. We’ve worked with many parents over the years whose children died as a direct result of sexual exploitation and other harms they faced on Meta’s platforms. These parents don’t need another fake apology from Mark Zuckerberg or another insincere promise that Meta is finally taking children’s well-being seriously. Instead, they need government leaders to step in and force Meta to make its platforms safe so that no other families have to experience their loss.

“We commend Attorney General Torrez for his leadership in taking Meta to court. As Meta and other Big Tech companies go to trial in New Mexico and California, we call on Congress to get off the sidelines and pass the strongest possible version of the Kids Online Safety Act with a duty of care and no preemption of state laws.

“Big Tech is facing justice in the courts this week. Now it’s time for Congress to do its part to keep our kids safe.”
