Statement: Great American Artificial Intelligence Act Falls Short
Fairplay Executive Director Josh Golin released the following statement today:
“American families need our elected leaders in Congress to make sure our kids are protected from the dangers of AI. Unfortunately, the ‘Great American Artificial Intelligence Act of 2026′ falls well short of that need. The discussion draft of this legislation does nothing to address a number of the key harms that children have already experienced as a result of AI chatbots and platforms, including suicide, sexual exploitation, and mental health harms from compulsive use and unhealthy attachment. At the same time, the bill misguidedly incentivizes the use of AI in schools at a time when the technology has not been proven safe or effective. It also risks limiting the ability of states to address AI harms moving forward.
“Children’s safety is more important than any new technology or the profits of any company. If the Great American Artificial Intelligence Act is to move forward, it must have stronger and broader protections for kids, it should not incentivize the use of more untested AI in schools, and it cannot restrict states’ ability to keep our children safe from AI’s rapidly evolving harms. Our kids deserve nothing less.”
