Welcoming Senate Markup of Kids Online Safety Act
Fairplay, the nation’s leading nonprofit fighting to protect kids from the dangers of Big Tech and AI, welcomes the announcement that the Senate Commerce Committee will markup the Kids Online Safety Act next week.
Fairplay Executive Director Josh Golin said: “We’re pleased to see the Kids Online Safety Act scheduled for markup next week. KOSA remains the most protective, popular, and bipartisan of all online safety legislation under consideration. Importantly, it appears the bill will be marked up as a standalone and not packaged with other bills, as children’s safety should never be a bargaining chip to move other legislation. By imposing a duty of care on online platforms, KOSA would be the most important new law to protect children online in nearly 30 years.
“Fairplay thank Sens. Cruz and Cantwell for making KOSA a priority, and Sens. Blackburn and Blumenthal for their amazing leadership on this bill. We’re also profoundly grateful to our partners in ParentsSOS, the inspiring network of survivor parents who have played a critical role in getting KOSA this far.
“Families should not have to wait any longer for their children to get the vital protections they need from deadly online harms. We urge the Commerce Committee to advance KOSA as written and without amendments, and we call on leaders in the House and Senate to work together to pass the strongest possible version of KOSA this year.”
