Fairplay Policy Counsel Haley Hinkle released the following statement today:
“By passing COPPA 2.0, the Senate has set the standard for protecting young people’s privacy in the modern age. This crucial legislation would expand online privacy protections to teenagers for the first time and limit online platforms’ ability to collect kids’ and teens’ personal information. The bill offers badly needed protections that would weaken the power of Big Tech to target minors with ads and content and stop their outrageous practice of purposefully overlooking the presence of underage users on their platforms.
“The Senate’s passage of COPPA 2.0 by unanimous consent follows its near unanimous vote to pass the Kids Online Safety Act in 2024. Unfortunately, while the Senate continues to show leadership on protecting young people online, the House continues to water down KOSA and COPPA 2.0.
“Fairplay thanks the Senate for putting parents and children ahead of tech companies by passing COPPA 2.0, and we call on the House to advance a strong version of COPPA 2.0 that will protect children’s and teen’s privacy and empower states to enact and enforce their own strong privacy laws.”
